Developmental Editing

Developmental editing focuses on the full content of your story. I will assess the plot, pacing, character development, and narrative structure of your manuscript to provide clear, actionable suggestions where your story could be stronger and highlight its best elements.

Developmental editing goes beyond the feedback you receive from alpha/beta readers. Think of your manuscript like a cake. Alpha/beta readers will tell you how your cake tastes, and a developmental editor will tell you how exactly to tweak the recipe in order to make it spectacular.

What I Provide:

Two passes of in-depth suggestions made as inline comments on your manuscript.
- Pass One: I will focus on the topics above and suggest ways to improve any points of interest. Examples of the kind of comments you can expect include prompting questions that encourage a writer to dig deeper into a moment or scene and sample rewrites for sections needing more depth or clarity, done by me, that can be used as a jumping-off point as we rework your manuscript. I like to work collaboratively at this stage, and I am happy to workshop any areas I have identified as needing a bit of polish with you.
- Pass Two: Once you have had a chance to review my suggestions from the first pass, I will ensure any changes or additions to the manuscript make sense and confirm that it is ready to move on to the next stage of editing.

Turnaround time will vary, depending on the length of the manuscript, but on average takes about 4-6 weeks. I am also happy to provide sensitivity-reading feedback on any developmental edits at a 40% discounted rate.

Reading

Beta readers provide feedback on unreleased manuscripts. In a two to three-week time frame, I will give you a general review, similar to what any reader might post on Goodreads or Storygraph, as well as provide detailed feedback on the following:

Were the opening lines compelling?
Does the story hold a reader's interest?
Are there any characters that need more development?
Do any scenes feel unnecessary or out of place?
Are there any words, phrases, or concepts that seemed overused?
Does the ending seem satisfying?
Other points of interest or specific feedback at the author's request.

Sensitivity Reading

We all have blind spots, but a sensitivity reader can help ensure the representation in your story is authentic and sensitive. I will provide feedback on gender, sexual orientation, sex positivity, disability/mental health, and sexual assault, utilizing an intersectional feminist framework, as these are my areas of expertise.

I am happy to provide general feedback on other topics, but it is always best to source the bulk of sensitivity reading feedback from individuals with a background in the topic at hand.

Sensitivity reading feedback includes thoughtful inline feedback, as well as a one-to-two-page write-up containing my overall thoughts, suggestions, and the names and links of any suggested resources I think could be useful to you when applicable.

Bios: Writing about yourself is the hardest thing to do. So, let me do it for you! I will help you craft an author blurb that will let your readers know who you are and what you are all about.

Blurbs: Do you have an amazing book ready to publish, but you are stuck trying to condense all of that goodness into one short, 100-250 word description? Let me do it for you! Together, we will identify what elements of your story you would like to highlight, as well as any quotes or attention-grabbing details that are most likely to engage potential

Alpha Reading

$0.0011 Per Word

An alpha reader is the first person to read your book. At this stage, the manuscript can still be fairly rough and in its early stages. I will provide you with actionable, big-picture feedback regarding plot, character development, and tone.

I will provide inline notes as well as a one to two-page write-up including the following:

Are there any characters that could be inserted or removed from the story?
Do the Characters behave in a consistent and believable way?
Are there any characters that need more development?
Do any scenes feel unnecessary or out of place?
Does it feel as though the action is unfolding in the right place?
Are there any major plot holes or points of confusion in the story?
Do the voice and tone of the writing align with the genre?
Are there any words, phrases, or concepts that seemed overused? Any consistent technical issues that appeared throughout the manuscript that need to be addressed in self-edits?
Does the ending seem satisfying?
Does the story hold a reader's interest?
Other points of interest or specific feedback at the author's request.

Series Discount

If you pre-commit to having me edit two or more books in a series for you, I will discount the final cost of your edits by 10% per-manuscript booked

Service Pricing and Payment Structure

For projects of 1,000 words or fewer, payment is due in full upfront. For projects exceeding 1,000 words, I require a 50% payment at the start of the project, with the remaining 50% payable upon completion. Payment is due in full at the time of completion for Alpha and Beta reads, unless otherwise agreed upon beforehand.

Payment Plans:

I will always offer a payment plan on projects costing $1,000 or more. I love working with indie authors, and self-publishing can get expensive. If you are interested in setting up an alternative payment plan, just let me know, and we can find an arrangement that works for both of us.

New Deposit Policy:

While I am more than happy to book several months in advance, I now require a non-refundable $50 deposit on any editorial service or bundle with an estimated total cost under $1,000. A $100 deposit will be required for services with an estimated total cost of $1,000 or more. This deposit must be paid at the time of booking. Without this deposit, I cannot guarantee you a slot in your preferred month. The amount of your deposit will be deducted from your first payment.

Writing commissions

I provide opportunities for copywriting and creative project commissions. My prices and availability are subject to my current editing workload, the nature of the project content, and its length.
